Half a decade on from the launch of Marvel blockbuster Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, director Destin Daniel Cretton has said that a sequel is still in development.
Shang-Chi, which debuted in August 2021, received praise for its lead character portrayed by Simu Liu. Despite the positive reception, plans for an immediate sequel have dimmed. The absence of Shang-Chi in subsequent Marvel films will be rectified as Liu reprises his role in December's Avengers: Doomsday.
Director Cretton's schedule over the past five years has been packed with various projects. Initially set to direct Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, which later transformed into Doomsday, Cretton shifted to helm Spider-Man: Brand New Day due to changes in Disney's priorities and the replacement of actor Jonathan Majors. Amid these projects, the Disney+ series Wonder Man was also in the works, contributing to the delay in Shang-Chi's return to the screen.
Although Shang-Chi's next standalone movie seems to have been postponed to the MCU's upcoming phase after Avengers: Secret Wars in December 2027, the character's presence will endure. Director Cretton expressed enthusiasm for the sequel's development, emphasizing the importance of honoring the first film's success and the evolving nature of the project.
