Dragon Quest celebrates its 40th anniversary this year, and to mark the occasion, a new update was given on the long-in-development Dragon Quest 12: The Flames of Fate.
Dragon Quest 12, initially announced five years ago, is undergoing a significant overhaul. The executive producer, Yosuke Saito, revealed that the development has been restarted with a new title, Dragon Quest 12: Beyond Dreams. Saito explained that the decision to restart was made after facing numerous obstacles during the creation of the original version, Dragon Quest 12: The Flames of Fate. The development team, in consultation with the series' game designer, Yuji Horii, decided to redefine the game's concept and start afresh to deliver a product that will resonate with fans.
Despite the restart, the game retains its art style inspired by Akira Toriyama, known for his work on Dragon Ball. Saito showcased a glimpse of the game during a livestream, featuring vibrant new characters, environments, and creatures. The game's development encountered challenges in 2024, leading to the departure of series producer Yu Miyake. Following the success of Dragon Quest 11: Echoes of an Elusive Age in 2018, fans can anticipate the upcoming spin-off, Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World. This creature-collecting game, reminiscent of Pokemon but infused with Dragon Quest's charm, is set to launch on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch, and Switch 2.
