Sony Benefits from Tariff Refunds, Consumers Unlikely to Receive

US tariffs may have forced Sony to increase the prices of its PlayStation hardware, but the company is now benefiting from those tariffs being refunded.

Sony has reported an increase in operating income due in part to tariff refunds received after the US Supreme Court deemed President Trump's tariffs unlawful. The company's Q1 2026 earnings show a 37% boost in its Game & Network Services business, with tariff refunds being highlighted as a positive contributor. Despite raising PS5 prices in August 2025 and May 2026, Sony has not indicated any plans to pass on the refunds to consumers, leading to a class-action lawsuit. The ongoing RAM shortage and global economic pressures have also influenced console price increases, with Microsoft expecting further hikes due to rising component costs.

In a similar vein, Nintendo faced a class-action lawsuit in April 2026 over tariff refund retention. Sony, on the other hand, has seen a rise in physical-to-digital game sales, nearing 100 million lifetime PS5 sales, and has announced a shift to all-digital game sales in 2028.
