Warhammer: Age of Sigmar Spearhead City of Ash Overview

Whatever kinds of games you favor, you’re probably aware of Age of Sigmar, Games Workshop’s flagship fantasy battle game, thanks to its stores' up and down global high streets. You may be less aware of its kissing cousin, Spearhead which uses a stripped-down version of the rules and fixed army lists to allow faster, more furious fights that are also more newbie-friendly. It’s proved extremely popular.

Games Workshop has released a new starter set for the Spearhead format, called Spearhead: City of Ash, providing everything needed to play in one box. The set includes detailed miniatures of human warriors and rat-man assassins, along with ruined building scenery for added ambiance.

The game components include two rules handbooks, decks of cards, and a double-sided base board. While the miniatures are intricate, some assembly challenges may be faced, especially with the Skaven faction models. The gameplay involves strategic planning, objective control, and card play, offering a different experience from traditional Games Workshop games.

Spearhead introduces a unique gameplay style where victory is not solely based on eliminating opponents but also on controlling objectives. Each game round rewards points based on objective control, emphasizing strategic decision-making and unit positioning. The addition of relics and twist cards further adds depth and unpredictability to the gameplay, requiring players to adapt their strategies on the fly.
