The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales Overview

I love pixel art. I find that, even decades later, the best-looking games of the ‘90s – Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy 6, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past – can still be breathtaking in a way older 3D games usually aren’t.

The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales brings Square Enix's signature HD-2D art style to the action-adventure genre, offering a compelling story, impressive build customization, and a captivating world. The game follows Elliot, an adventurer on a mission to save the princess and the kingdom by traveling through time. Alongside Elliot is Faie, a fairy with magical abilities, creating a charming duo. Despite some shortcomings in the time travel mechanics and enemy variety, the game shines with its beautiful world design and creative boss battles.

The core of the game lies in time travel, although the execution falls short in delivering significant changes across different ages. The enemies and landscapes remain largely unchanged, lacking evolution over time. However, the game compensates with stunning visuals and character designs, showcasing Square Enix's expertise in the HD-2D art style. The addition of Magicite buffs and a crafting system adds depth to the gameplay, allowing for unique character customization and empowering combat experiences.

Overall, The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales offers a nostalgic yet fresh take on the action-adventure genre, blending classic pixel art with modern game mechanics to create an engaging experience for players.
