Roberts Space Industries and Cloud Imperium Games have revealed that Star Citizen has surpassed $1 billion in crowdfunding since its launch in 2012. The game has received $1.007 billion from over 6.5 million backers. Despite being playable, Star Citizen remains in early access after a decade of development.
Chris Roberts, the founder of Roberts Space Industries, mentioned that the standalone single-player game Squadron 42 is set for a 2026 release, with the 1.0 version of Star Citizen to follow. Roberts expressed his excitement about the game nearing completion and highlighted the extensive development process that has gone into realizing his vision.
Star Citizen has faced controversies, including delays that led to a backer seeking a refund through legal channels. The game was also involved in a lawsuit with Crytek over engine use. The introduction of a $5,000 Anvil Odin ship, although not usable yet, showcases the game's revenue model. Various ship prices and subscription options are available for players, with the base game priced at $45.
