Official Baldur's Gate 2 Remake Reportedly in Development at Wizards

An official Baldur’s Gate 2 remake is reportedly in the works at Wizards of the Coast. PC Gamer reported on the potential remakes of BioWare’s Baldur’s Gate 1 and 2, with hints of a simultaneous launch. IGN has requested comments from Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro.

PC Gamer reported that BioWare’s Baldur’s Gate 1 and 2 will both get remakes ahead of the release of Baldur’s Gate 4. The publication mentioned that former BioWare developer and Baldur's Gate 2 co-lead designer Kevin Martens is involved in the remake project, hinting that both remakes might be launched simultaneously. IGN has reached out to Wizards of the Coast and parent company Hasbro for comments.

The focus now shifts to the scale of these remakes. It's unlikely that Baldur’s Gate 1 and 2 will be remade in the style of Baldur’s Gate 3 due to the extensive content conversion required. Speculation suggests that these remakes could serve as a bridge between the success of Baldur’s Gate 3 and its highly anticipated sequel, posing a significant challenge for the developers. With Larian moving on from the Baldur’s Gate franchise, the expectations for the next installment are monumental.

Baldur’s Gate, initially released in 1998 by BioWare and Interplay, led to the sequel Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn in 2000, both set in the Forgotten Realms universe. These classic titles featured isometric views and pausable real-time gameplay with control over multiple characters. The question arises whether the remakes will adopt Baldur’s Gate 3’s turn-based combat or opt for a hybrid system.
