Australian writer/director Adrian Chiarella's feature debut, Leviticus, tells the story of a teenager named Naim living in a very religious town. When Naim's secret romantic relationship with his classmate Ryan is exposed, a series of dangerous events unfold involving a 'Deliverance Healer' called in by the community. The film explores themes of homophobia and the consequences of suppressing love and desire.
Chiarella's storytelling is straightforward and impactful, with young actors Joe Bird and Stacy Clausen delivering strong performances as Naim and Ryan. The movie effectively blends horror elements with a narrative that reflects the challenges faced by LGBTQ+ youth in judgmental environments.
Mia Wasikowska also shines in her role as Naim's mother, adding depth to the narrative. Leviticus is praised for its eerie atmosphere, tense moments, and evocative score by Jed Kurzel, making it a compelling addition to the horror genre.
