AMD Radeon RX 9070 GRE Review

When the AMD Radeon RX 7900 GRE came out back in 2024, it offered some of the best bang-for-your-buck performance to be found in a graphics card, especially at 1440p. The new Radeon RX 9070 GRE is trying to follow in those footsteps, even launching at the same $549 price tag.

With the Radeon RX 9070 GRE, AMD aims to replicate the success of its predecessor by providing solid 1440p performance at a $549 price point. However, due to the ongoing RAM shortage, the 9070 GRE is priced the same as the original 9070 despite offering lower specs. The GPU landscape has evolved significantly since the launch of the 7900 GRE, impacting the value proposition of the new model.

The Radeon RX 9070 GRE, built on AMD's RDNA 4 architecture, features 48 Compute Units and 12GB of VRAM. While priced at $549, the card faces tough competition and a market where GPU prices continue to rise. Despite offering respectable performance, the 9070 GRE's value proposition is challenged by its pricing and specs compared to other GPUs in its segment.

AMD's decision to focus on mid-range offerings with the 9070 XT and 9070 GRE has reshaped the high-end GPU market, leaving Nvidia's RTX 5080 and 5090 uncontested at the top. The 9070 GRE's pricing and performance trade-offs position it as a mid-generation option that struggles to stand out in a market plagued by supply chain issues and price inflation.

Featuring third-generation ray accelerators and second-generation AI accelerators, the RX 9070 GRE introduces improvements in performance and visual upscaling capabilities. Despite its technical enhancements, the GPU's value proposition is hindered by its pricing relative to its performance and the evolving market dynamics.
