YouTube has announced improved AI labels for videos as part of a move to add transparency to content made with generative AI.
YouTube has introduced enhanced AI disclosure labels for videos to increase transparency regarding content created with generative AI. The platform aims to address the rise of fake AI-generated videos, including trailers, that have misled viewers. YouTube's updates include moving disclosure labels for photorealistic and meaningfully AI altered content to more prominent positions and introducing automatic AI detection.
Creators are still required to manually disclose realistic AI use, but YouTube will now automatically apply a label if significant photorealistic AI use is detected. The platform also outlined cases where disclosures will remain permanent, such as content created using YouTube's AI tools or containing specific metadata. These changes aim to balance transparency with creator control and do not impact video recommendations or monetization eligibility.
YouTube's efforts come after the platform removed two major channels responsible for fake movie trailers, following a cease-and-desist letter from Disney regarding copyright infringement. The rise of misleading AI-generated videos has prompted notable figures like Brian Cox and Keanu Reeves to speak out against deepfake content. Reeves reportedly pays a company to remove imitators from platforms like TikTok and Meta.
