Xbox's Project Helix to Ditch Disc Drive; Microsoft Explores Digital

Xbox's Project Helix reportedly won't include a disc drive, as Microsoft looks into digitalizing physical games.

Reports suggest that Project Helix, the upcoming Xbox, will go disc-less, following PlayStation's move to cease physical game disc production in 2028. Microsoft is reportedly working on a disc-to-digital feature, allowing users to convert physical discs into digital licenses. However, this feature will only apply to Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S games, not older titles.

The Verge speculates that Project Helix might also lack a disc drive, hinting at a digital-focused future for Xbox. While current-gen consoles offer both disc and digital options, the transition to all-digital seems inevitable. Microsoft is yet to confirm these reports, but more details on Project Helix are expected later this year.

Despite potential concerns over pricing and limited physical media support, the next generation of consoles is poised for a shift towards digital content. As players await further updates on Project Helix, the industry remains divided on the future of physical game distribution.
