Xbox Layoffs Impact Id Software and ZeniMax Amid Focus Shift

It's a bleak Monday for Xbox, as the division is losing five of its studios and approximately 20% of its workforce will be laid off throughout the current fiscal year.

Microsoft's Xbox division is undergoing significant restructuring, with reports indicating layoffs affecting Id Software and ZeniMax Online Studios. While the two studios are not closing, they are expected to see substantial workforce reductions. The layoffs are part of a broader plan that will see a total of 3,200 employees cut from the Xbox team.

Xbox boss Asha Sharma emphasized a shift towards larger franchises within the studios, such as Bethesda and ZeniMax. The focus will extend beyond titles like Fallout and The Elder Scrolls to include projects like Wolfenstein, Doom, and Quake. Despite the layoffs, ongoing projects like Clockwork Revolution from InXile Entertainment and Gears of War: E-Day from The Coalition remain unaffected.

However, uncertainties loom over titles from departing studios like Ninja Theory and Undead Labs, such as Senua and State of Decay 3. The fate of Marvel's Blade at Arkane Studios also remains unclear as the transition progresses.
