Xbox's Chief Technology Officer, Scott Van Vliet, has provided insights into the system and service outage that affected various aspects such as game libraries, sign-ins, and game launches for players. Van Vliet attributed the issue to a failure of a licensing service outside of Xbox that the platform relies on. This failure led to sign-in problems and entitlement check failures, affecting features like accessing the Full Library and launching owned games.
To address the situation, Xbox's on-call teams identified the issue through automated monitoring, declared a major incident, and redirected traffic to functional parts of the system. Van Vliet emphasized the need for a comprehensive post-incident review to prevent similar occurrences in the future, focusing on strengthening dependencies, enhancing failure detection, containment mechanisms, and improving communication with users during such events.
The incident coincided with PlayStation's own service disruption, while Xbox geared up for the upcoming wide release of Halo: Campaign Evolved, a remake based on Unreal Engine 5 and a tribute to the original Xbox's 25th anniversary. IGN's review of Campaign Evolved rated it 7 out of 10.
