While Microsoft itself just set a record for the biggest single-day market cap swing in history, the company's Xbox division is struggling. How will new Xbox CEO Asha Sharma turn things around?
In a memo to staff, Sharma outlined the top Xbox priorities for the current fiscal year and beyond, focusing on Core, Content, Creation, and Connection. Efforts include making Minecraft the world's creator platform, turning Xbox games into global franchises, and strengthening the Xbox platform led by console.
Despite a 7% revenue decrease in the latest fiscal year, Microsoft aims to return to growth by the end of FY2027. Sharma emphasized the importance of investing in player value and revenue acceleration, with ambitions for sustained growth in players and engagement by FY2030.
Microsoft is reshaping its game development model, divesting from some studios to focus on strong franchises like Fallout and Elder Scrolls. The company is also expanding into film and TV projects, including a Call of Duty movie, Gears of War adaptations, and a new Minecraft movie set for release in 2027.
Xbox's new chief strategy officer, Matthew Ball, discussed the company's recent challenges and future plans, including staff reductions as part of the growth strategy.
