Xbox Aims to Entertain 1 Billion People Daily

1 Billion DAU! Following the announcement that Xbox will cut its workforce by 20%-- with 1,600 employees already laid off in the first wave of retrenchments--Xbox CEO Asha Sharma has detailed plans for the company to reach an absurd number of people every day.

Xbox CEO Asha Sharma expressed the ambitious goal of entertaining over a billion people daily, emphasizing the importance of creating connections. Despite the significant workforce reduction, Sharma remains confident in Xbox's potential, citing beloved franchises and talented studios as pillars for future growth. The company's restructuring involves a strategic focus on mobile gaming and key partnerships with developers like King and Mojang.

While aiming for 1 billion daily active users (DAU) seems daunting, popular titles like Minecraft and Candy Crush play a crucial role in this vision. Minecraft boasted 140 million monthly active users in 2021, with ongoing success attributed to initiatives like the Minecraft movie release. Candy Crush, with approximately 26 million daily players, also contributes to Xbox's user base. However, even combining these figures falls short of the targeted 1 billion DAU.

Expanding beyond first-party titles, Xbox includes third-party games like Fortnite and Microsoft's own World of Warcraft and Sea of Thieves in its ecosystem. Despite these additions, surpassing the 1 billion DAU milestone remains a formidable challenge. Comparisons to Steam's record concurrent users highlight the scale of Xbox's ambition, aiming to outperform the leading PC platform by a significant margin. Microsoft's reported 500 million monthly active users in 2025 set the foundation for this goal, although the path to doubling this figure for daily engagement remains uncertain.
