The Witcher 3 director Konrad Tomaszkiewicz discusses the potential delay of next-generation consoles and its impact on game development.
The Witcher 3 director Konrad Tomaszkiewicz shared his thoughts on the possibility of the PlayStation 6 and next-gen Xbox being delayed due to memory and component shortages. He mentioned that his studio, Rebel Wolves, would not be too disappointed by the delay. Tomaszkiewicz expressed that delays could actually benefit developers, giving them more time to tackle new challenges that come with developing for a new platform.
Currently, Tomaszkiewicz is working on the upcoming vampire game, The Blood of Dawnwalker, set to release in September on console and PC. He highlighted the additional work required when developing for multiple platforms and the need for separate testing for each platform. Despite the challenges, he acknowledged that moving to more powerful platforms would bring visual improvements mainly due to enhanced RAM and processors.
While Sony has not officially announced the next PlayStation, Microsoft has been vocal about Project Helix. Xbox's chief strategy officer, Matthew Ball, mentioned that the company is reevaluating its approach to the project. The rising demand for components has led to increased hardware prices, with speculations suggesting future console prices could exceed $1,000. This trend may explain Sony's rumored shift to an all-digital model by 2028 to adapt to changing market dynamics.
