Riichiro Yamada, the producer of Virtua Fighter Crossroads, discussed the surprising source of inspiration behind the revival of the long-awaited fighting game series. In an interview with GamerBraves, Yamada explained that the creative spark for the new Virtua Fighter title came from HBO's Watchmen series. He highlighted that the series, despite its age, successfully brought a 33-year-old comic back into the mainstream, inspiring him to modernize Virtua Fighter's old settings and lore.
Virtua Fighter Crossroads is expected to feature a narrative-driven story mode led by a team of industry veterans. Yamada expressed the team's desire to innovate the storytelling approach compared to their previous projects, aiming to expand the existing lore of Virtua Fighter and create a more immersive narrative experience for players.
The producer emphasized the importance of players experiencing the story through gameplay rather than just cutscenes. He confirmed that the game is set 10 to 20 years after Virtua Fighter 5, focusing on the comeback of classic characters who were nearly forgotten in the game's universe.
