The University of Silicon Valley stands out with its unique scholarship program that rewards students who excel in gaming. In addition to traditional esports programs and game development courses, the university offers the 'Max Achievement Scholarship' which has gained attention for its unconventional criteria. Students can earn up to $15,000 by demonstrating proficiency in a variety of games such as Final Fantasy XIV, Old School RuneScape, Hades, Risk of Rain 2, and Minecraft.
To qualify for the scholarship, students must achieve specific in-game milestones in two categories: Mastery and Legendary. Achieving Mastery can earn students up to $2,500 per term, while reaching Legendary status can grant them up to $5,000 per term, with each academic year comprising three terms. For instance, students can showcase their skills in Old School RuneScape by obtaining the Max Cape or in Final Fantasy XIV by mastering all combat and crafter/gatherer jobs.
The University of Silicon Valley views this scholarship as a way to recognize qualities like disciplined practice, strategic problem-solving, and the pursuit of excellence, which are essential for academic success. The program, known as the Max Achievement Scholarship, plans to award 10-15 students during the 2026-2027 academic year, with potential expansion based on applicant quality and program performance.
