The Witcher 3's upcoming expansion, Songs of the Past, was originally targeted to release this year, but developer CD Projekt Red pushed it to 2027.
The upcoming expansion for The Witcher 3, Songs of the Past, was initially planned for release this year but has now been postponed to 2027 by developer CD Projekt Red. During an earnings call, CD Projekt's joint-CEO Michal Nowakowski explained that the decision to delay the expansion was made to ensure the best possible outcome for players. The studio had considered a 2026 release but opted for 2027 to achieve optimal results.
While Songs of the Past has been pushed back, CD Projekt Red has confirmed that they have other undisclosed projects in advanced stages of development slated for release this year. The expansion, described as an expansion rather than DLC, will see players once again assume the role of Geralt of Rivia in a new adventure. Little is known about the expansion's storyline and content, but it is expected to be similar in size and scope to The Witcher 3's previous expansions, Blood and Wine and Hearts of Stone.
Fans have speculated that Songs of the Past may have ties to The Witcher 4, with theories suggesting a connection between the new sword featured in the expansion's key art and the character Ciri. Community manager Amelia Korzycka hinted at the sword's significance in the upcoming story. The expansion is considered a "prologue" to The Witcher 4, providing a precursor to the highly anticipated sequel. More information about Songs of the Past is set to be revealed at Gamescom in August. Additionally, The Witcher 3 has surpassed 65 million units sold, solidifying its position as one of the best-selling games of all time.
