The Transition from Hand-Drawn to CG Animation at Disney

Animator Aaron Blaise reflects on the shift from hand-drawn to computer-generated animation at Disney, highlighting the impact on traditional animators.

Animator Aaron Blaise, known for his work on Disney classics like Aladdin and The Lion King, discusses his transition from hand-drawn to computer-generated animation. After directing Brother Bear, one of Disney's last hand-drawn films, Blaise left to create 'Snow Bear,' a hand-drawn short film produced independently. The emergence of CG animation marked a significant change for traditionally-trained animators, leading many to adapt to the new technology or pursue alternative paths in the industry.

The history of CG at Disney dates back to the mid-1980s, with notable implementations in films like The Great Mouse Detective. The release of Toy Story in 1995, the first fully computer-animated feature film, signaled a new era for animation. While some animators embraced the shift to CG, others struggled to find their place in an industry increasingly dominated by computer-generated projects.

Despite initial optimism about coexisting with CG animation, Disney's transition to computer-generated films posed challenges for traditional animators. The studio's shift towards CG led to layoffs and a shift in focus away from hand-drawn animation. As the industry evolved, animators faced the daunting task of adapting to new technologies and workflows, marking the end of an era for traditional 2D animation.
