EA has released a massive update for The Sims 4, including bug-fixes, new clothing options, and improvements to interactions with Infants and Toddlers.
EA has rolled out a significant base game update for The Sims 4, introducing numerous bug fixes, a fresh clothing category, and substantial changes to how Sim-parents engage with Infants and Toddlers. Morgan Henry, a producer for The Sims 4, shared insights with GameSpot via email regarding the functionality of the new features, the team's focus on resolving bugs, and the future direction of The Sims franchise. Henry, who has been part of The Sims 4 team since 2018 and has overseen the development of many DLC packs, emphasized that this update, available to all players at no cost, is one of the most extensive patches to date. She particularly highlighted the enhancements made to interactions between Sim-parents and their Infants.
The update also addresses a common player complaint about a bug causing all photos and selfies taken by Sims to appear completely black. Henry explained that the team has been prioritizing the resolution of these 'Black Photo' bugs, which are intricate and unique in their causes and manifestations. While some photos can be restored, others cannot, depending on various factors. The patch notes now provide detailed information on each 'Black Photo' fix and whether it is retroactively recoverable.
One of the most challenging issues tackled in this update was the handling of Infants being picked up and put down frequently, requiring a series of fixes and updates. The team conducted thorough analyses, including watching gameplay in slow motion, to understand the reasons behind these interactions and to improve the overall experience. Despite the complexity of the task, the team is proud of the outcome and hopes players will appreciate the enhancements.
