Final Fantasy returning to turn-based combat through the upcoming Final Fantasy Resonance is a pretty big deal, even if you were just going off the reception to its initial reveal.
Final Fantasy Resonance is bringing back turn-based combat in a significant way, with an HD-2D art style and a story inspired by Brave Exvius. The game introduces new elements like a stagger system, Job-like Visions, and deep party customization, drawing inspiration from classics like Final Fantasy V. Producer Keisuke Nakashima and director Hiroto Furuya shared insights on the game's development.
Turn-based RPGs have been making a comeback, evident in the success of Atlus RPGs, Square Enix titles like Octopath Traveler, and independent games such as Sea of Stars and Deltarune. The genre received mainstream attention with games like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. Nakashima and Furuya discussed the genre's resurgence and the potential for growth in pixel art turn-based games.
Creators like Furuya attribute the resurgence to a generation of developers who grew up playing turn-based games and are now revisiting and reimagining those experiences. This trend is not limited to games but extends to anime, manga, and other mediums. P-Studio director Kazuhisa Wada also commented on the rediscovery of classic elements in modern turn-based games.
Final Fantasy Resonance is scheduled for release on October 22 this year for PlayStation, Xbox, PC, and Nintendo Switch. Stay tuned for more insights on the game's development and features from Nakashima and Furuya.
