The Impact of AI on Gaming Costs

We’re eight or nine months into the RAM crisis, depending on when you start counting, and it doesn’t look like gaming is going to get more affordable any time soon.

Nvidia and AMD have both reportedly raised prices on graphics cards just this week, and the problem isn’t exclusive to PC gaming the way it’s been in the past. This time around, AI companies have made promises of future deals with Samsung, Micron, and SK Hynix, promising to buy up memory chips before they even existed. Despite some non-contracts falling through, memory manufacturers are still dedicating a large portion of their capacity to AI and datacenters. A class action lawsuit alleging price fixing has been filed against memory companies, but any resolution may take years to materialize.

Devices from the PS5 to cars are increasing in price to enhance AI capabilities. However, the actual impact of these investments is being questioned. While AI has brought advancements like Nvidia's DLSS, which has benefited PC gaming, the continuous push for AI features is leading to mixed reactions. New AI features from companies like Nvidia and Microsoft are met with skepticism, as gamers face rising costs amidst the AI-fueled RAM crisis.

The future of gaming costs amidst the ongoing RAM crisis remains uncertain. The industry is grappling with the idea that higher prices driven by AI advancements may become the new norm. Concerns are raised about the quality of games as AI becomes more prevalent and costs continue to rise, potentially leading to a scenario where gamers pay more for a deteriorating experience.
