Take-Two CEO Defends Red Dead Online Success

Strauss Zelnick, the boss of Rockstar Games parent company Take-Two, has pushed back at the suggestion Red Dead Online was a missed opportunity, insisting it “has been immensely successful and long lasting.”

Strauss Zelnick, the CEO of Take-Two Interactive, has refuted claims that Red Dead Online missed its mark, highlighting its success and longevity. Red Dead Online, the multiplayer segment of Red Dead Redemption 2, received its last major update in July 2021 with the Blood Money expansion. Since then, Rockstar has shifted focus to a monthly event schedule.

Despite hopes for substantial updates following the Strange Tales of the West update, fans feel Red Dead Online has not received as much attention as GTA Online. Recent leaks revealing GTA Online's higher revenue and player count compared to Red Dead Online have fueled this sentiment, with players noting the lack of updates and prevalent griefing issues.

During an interview with IGN, Zelnick emphasized the exceptional sales of Red Dead Redemption 2, countering any notion of a missed opportunity. He attributed Red Dead's enduring success to its quality entertainment value and timeless appeal, despite not being a recent release. Take-Two's financial report confirmed that Red Dead Redemption 2 has surpassed 85 million copies sold, securing its place as the third best-selling video game ever.
