Take-Two CEO Defends Red Dead Online Success

Red Dead Redemption 2's multiplayer mode, Red Dead Online, did not achieve the same level of success and popularity that GTA Online did, but Rockstar owner Take-Two boss Strauss Zelnick wants people to know the game overall was still a gigantic hit.

Despite Red Dead Online not reaching the same heights as GTA Online, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick emphasized that the game was a massive success, selling 85 million copies and becoming the No. 4 best-selling game in history, surpassing Wii Sports. Zelnick dismissed the idea of Red Dead Online being a 'missed opportunity,' highlighting its immense success and longevity.

Zelnick also discussed the unique position of the Red Dead franchise, suggesting that if it weren't overshadowed by GTA, it would receive even more recognition for its quality and entertainment value. He praised Red Dead Redemption 2 for its enduring appeal, noting its consistent sales performance and engaging gameplay.

While Red Dead Redemption 2 continues to sell well, with an additional 3 million copies sold in the first quarter of 2022, the game has seen significant discounts, now available for $15 on PS5 and $20 on Xbox Series X|S. Red Dead Online is currently offered at a 50% discount on consoles, with the standalone version priced at $20. As fans eagerly await news of a new installment in the Red Dead series, Rockstar's focus is on the upcoming launch of GTA 6 in November, with a PC release likely to follow.
