Supergirl Fails to Soar with $68 Million Box Office Debut

Supergirl suffered a crash landing in theaters with a $68 million opening weekend at the global box office.

The new DCU film, Supergirl, had a disappointing $38 million domestic and around $30 million international opening weekend, falling short of Warner Bros. and DC Studios' $50 million target across 3,600 North American theaters. Despite being a highly anticipated sequel to 2025's Superman, the film's budget of $170 million to $186 million, excluding marketing costs, poses a challenge for it to break even.

Critics and fans have mixed feelings about Supergirl, with Rotten Tomatoes giving it a 56% score from fans and 77% from critics. While some praised Milly Alcock's portrayal of Kara Zor-El and the practical effects, others found it hard to connect with the storyline. IGN rated the film 6/10, stating that while Alcock's performance was commendable, the movie felt like a patchwork of elements from other films.

In the box office rankings, Supergirl landed in second place behind Disney's Toy Story 5, which maintained its top position with a $70 million domestic earnings in the second weekend. Other notable performances include Obsession in third place with $9.8 million, Jackass: Best and Last in fourth with $8.4 million, and Disclosure Day in fifth with $8.1 million.
