A copy of Super Mario Bros. has set a new record by selling for $3 million at auction, becoming the most expensive video game ever. Heritage Auctions confirmed the sale, highlighting that the PSA 9.6 A++ copy of the iconic Nintendo game surpassed the previous $2 million record from 2021. This specific copy is from the game's second production run in early 1986, featuring a unique gloss sticker, and is considered a 40-year-old gem in remarkable condition.
The consignment director for video games at Heritage, Evan Masingill, emphasized the historical significance of this sale, noting the exceptional backstory of the item being discovered untouched inside a Control Deck NES console bundle after nearly four decades. Described as the 'holy grail of video game collecting,' this $3 million copy of Super Mario Bros. stands out due to its pristine condition, being the best-preserved among three known sealed copies from the same run, with others graded at VGA 80 and Wata 9.4 A++. Additionally, this collector's item marks the first sealed copy to be auctioned publicly.
In addition to the game, the buyer also received a launch edition NES Control Deck console as part of the purchase. Although not valued at $3 million on its own, the unopened console adds a unique touch to this extraordinary acquisition.
