Steam Deck Price Increase Announced

Valve has announced a price hike for the Steam Deck OLED in the US--and it's a substantial increase.

Valve has revealed a significant price increase for the Steam Deck OLED models in the US. The 1TB variant will now cost $950, up from $650, while the 512GB version is rising to $790 from $550. Valve explained that the surge in prices is due to escalating memory and storage expenses. The company emphasized that the new prices are a response to the current state of component costs and global logistical challenges in the industry.

Valve's decision to raise prices on the Steam Deck follows similar moves by PlayStation and Xbox. Meanwhile, Nintendo is also planning a price hike for the upcoming Switch 2 in September. Valve's upcoming hardware release, the new Steam Machine, is expected later this year, but pricing details are yet to be disclosed. With the uncertain global economic landscape, consumers may need to prepare for higher price tags on new hardware releases.

Yazan Aldehayyat, a hardware engineer, mentioned that the goal is to offer a competitive price that aligns with the product's value and remains affordable. Various factors, such as geopolitical tensions in Iran, the impact of the Strait of Hormuz closure on oil prices, increased demand for chips driven by AI, and trade policies like former US President Donald Trump's tariffs, are contributing to the rise in prices across multiple industries.
