Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu Box Office Success

Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu brought in an estimated $165 million at the global box office during the four-day Memorial Day holiday.

Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu raked in around $165 million worldwide over the Memorial Day weekend, with $102 million coming from domestic markets and $63 million from international territories. This movie marks the first new Star Wars film to hit theaters since 2019's divisive Rise of Skywalker, following a series of Disney+ shows, including The Mandalorian. The box office performance of this film is being closely watched as an indicator of the franchise's relevance in 2026.

Comparatively, Solo: A Star Wars Story, which faced financial losses during its theatrical run, earned $103 million domestically over the same four-day Memorial Day period in 2018. In North America, The Mandalorian and Grogu had the weakest opening for a Star Wars movie since Disney's acquisition of the franchise in 2012, albeit marginally. Despite this, the film's production cost of $165 million is notably lower than previous Star Wars movies, although marketing expenses need to be factored in. The movie has been well-received by audiences, boasting an 89% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes' user-generated Popcornmeter.

Industry experts like Jeff Bock from Exhibitor Relations Co are optimistic about the film's ability to stabilize the Star Wars universe. The focus now shifts to how The Mandalorian and Grogu will perform in the coming weeks at the box office, with comparisons being drawn to Solo's global earnings of $392.9 million. Looking ahead, Lucasfilm is pinning hopes on next year's Star Wars: Starfighter, starring Ryan Gosling and directed by Shawn Levy, to breathe new life into the franchise.
