The Mandalorian and Grogu enters theaters under intense box office scrutiny as the first new Star Wars movie since 2019.

The latest Star Wars movie, The Mandalorian and Grogu, featuring Pedro Pascal reprising his role as Din Djarin, is expected to earn $80-100 million domestically over the Memorial Day weekend. Despite this, Lucasfilm is facing challenges in attracting younger audiences to the franchise, with declining revenues from each film release. The upcoming Star Wars: Starfighter, set to release in 2027, is generating more optimism among industry insiders and analysts.

The Mandalorian and Grogu, receiving a lukewarm 5/10 review from IGN, marks the first new Star Wars movie since The Rise of Skywalker in 2019. Director Jon Favreau and co-CEO Dave Filoni are hopeful that the film will resonate with a new generation of viewers, free from the expectations of a new trilogy. Meanwhile, Star Wars: Starfighter, directed by Shawn Levy and starring Ryan Gosling, promises a fresh standalone adventure without any legacy characters.

While Ahsoka Season 2 is in development for Disney+, the future of Star Wars remains uncertain following Kathleen Kennedy's departure. The Mandalorian and Grogu is set to premiere on May 22, with Star Wars: Starfighter scheduled for release on May 28, 2027.
