Sony Settles With Fired Marathon Game Director, Adds Name to Credits

Sony has reached a settlement with former developer Christopher Barrett, who it had accused of sexual misconduct.

Former Marathon game director Christopher Barrett, fired for misconduct, has settled with Sony and Bungie for over $200 million. Barrett will now be credited in Marathon. He denied allegations, claiming his firing was to avoid paying out $50 million owed. The settlement includes adding Barrett's name to Marathon credits.

Barrett expressed satisfaction with the outcome, thanking supporters and looking forward to future projects. Bungie faced layoffs amid ongoing struggles, with CEO Hermen Hulst mentioning significant staff impact. Sony remains committed to Marathon despite player struggles.

Bungie's financial woes led to Sony's $3.6 billion acquisition in 2022. Destiny 2 issues, including underperformance of expansions, contributed to Bungie's challenges. Plans for Destiny Infinity were scrapped due to high costs and risks, impacting support for Marathon.

Destiny 3 was considered but deemed unfeasible, with production costs cited as a barrier. Despite Bungie's split from Activision in 2019, self-publishing Destiny didn't prevent financial difficulties. Marathon's $250 million budget didn't translate to sales success, aligning with Destiny 2's struggles.
