Sony Faces Backlash Over Decision to Ditch PlayStation 5 Discs

Sony knew its decision to kill PlayStation 5 discs would spark outrage, and reportedly issued staff with the 'strictest' social media guidelines to stop them from publicly commenting on the controversy.

God of War Laufey writer Alanah Pearce revealed that Sony had stringent social media guidelines in place to prevent staff from commenting on the backlash following the announcement that PlayStation 5 games would no longer be released on physical discs starting January 2026. Despite backlash from gamers who prefer physical editions, Sony justified its move by citing consumer trends favoring digital formats. The company emphasized that the transition aligns with the community's preferences for accessing and playing games.

Despite petitions and vocal opposition, Sony has shown no signs of reversing its decision. Industry analysts predict that the shift to all-digital releases will increase Sony's revenue per sale, especially with rising console costs. The company stands to benefit financially by retaining a larger share of revenue from digital sales compared to physical copies.

Over 335,000 people have signed a petition urging Sony to reconsider, but experts believe this will not sway the company's stance. With a vast user base and lucrative digital sales, Sony is unlikely to be deterred by protests against its decision to go all-digital for new game releases.
