Ever since Nintendo decided on physical Switch 2 games costing more than their digital counterparts, Amazon has joined Walmart in pushing back against the higher prices with discounts on several major upcoming releases.
Right now, Star Fox and Splatoon Raiders are both available to preorder for $49.94, down from their $59.99 physical MSRP. Following the latest Nintendo Direct, newly announced Switch 2 exclusives are already seeing discounts as well. Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave is available to preorder for $69.97, while Nintendo Switch Sports Resort has dropped to $49.94.
These discounts effectively erase much of the new physical premium Nintendo is introducing. Star Fox, for example, carries a $49.99 digital price but a $59.99 physical MSRP. Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave actually carries a $79.99 physical MSRP (yeesh), but $69.99 digital. Ultimately, seeing these games discounted before launch is an encouraging sign for anyone who still wants to build out their physical library.
Another benefit is that you don't have to pay for the game until it ships (per Amazon and Walmart standard preorder policy), unlike buying digitally, where you have to cough up the cash right away. Amazon and Walmart are currently absorbing much of the additional cost, allowing players to pick up boxed copies for close to, or in some cases, the same price as, their digital counterparts. That's either out of the goodness of the retail giant's corporate hearts, or potentially more likely to try to avoid losing potential customers. But there's no guarantee these discounts will remain available until launch, or even after launch, however, so anyone interested may want to secure a preorder while the lower prices are still live.
