For a long time, the common wisdom was that game consoles would usurp PC gaming, leaving it a niche hobby, ignored by the greater gaming community.
Recently, the narrative has shifted as PC gaming expands while console sales decline. Analysts predict the next Xbox and PlayStation could start at $900, making consoles increasingly unaffordable. With many games now playable without consoles, especially for younger gamers, the traditional gaming sector is facing challenges. In the past year, overall game spending fell by 4%, with hardware sales plummeting by 27%. Sales of Xbox Series and PlayStation 5 dropped significantly, while Nintendo's figures were boosted by the new Nintendo Switch 2, despite a 10% decrease.
Over the last 18 months, prices for PS5 and Xbox consoles have risen, with the Nintendo Switch 2 launching at $450, 50% higher than its predecessor. These escalating costs are making consoles a luxury for only the most dedicated gamers, impacting the industry's traditional market.
