Revival of Backyard Sports Franchise

The Backyard Sports series' resurgence began with a re-release of the classic 1997 game Backyard Baseball, culminating in the launch of an all-new entry this month.

The revival of the Backyard Sports series started with the re-release of the 1997 classic Backyard Baseball a few years ago. However, the recent launch of a new entry marks a significant milestone for a franchise that had been dormant for years. Playground Productions CEO Lindsay Barnett played a crucial role in this revival, transitioning from being an elementary-school teacher to acquiring the rights and finding a development partner for the legendary franchise.

After realizing the absence of age-appropriate sports games for her students during the COVID-19 pandemic, Barnett embarked on a mission to bring back the Backyard Sports games. Following a challenging two-year search, she secured the rights to the franchise and collaborated with Mega Cat Studios to develop new games. The journey included re-releases of classic titles like Backyard Baseball '97 before venturing into creating a brand-new game that blends the beloved 2D style with modern 3D elements.

The new Backyard Baseball game retains the essence of the original series, appealing to both longtime fans and a new generation of players. Notably, the absence of microtransactions sets this game apart, offering unlockables, trophies, and achievements solely through gameplay.

Moreover, the involvement of current MLB players and the iconic character Pablo Sanchez, known as 'The Secret Weapon,' adds to the excitement surrounding the franchise's comeback. The new game aims to provide an engaging and wholesome gaming experience reminiscent of the classic Backyard Sports titles.
