PS5 Owners Protest Sony's Decision to Go All-Digital

PS5 owners are cancelling their PlayStation Plus subscriptions in protest at Sony's controversial decision to stop releasing games on physical discs — but the gesture will not force the console maker to change its mind, analysts say.

Sony has faced backlash from PlayStation users following the announcement of transitioning to an all-digital future for new PS5 games starting in January 2028, a move expected to continue with PS6. Despite a petition with over 200,000 signatures urging Sony to reconsider, analysts believe the protests will not sway the company. Dr. Serkan Toto from Kantan Games mentioned that even if half a million subscribers cancel, it would only represent a small fraction of Sony's vast user base.

With digital sales dominating the gaming industry, Sony's decision is seen as a strategic move to cut costs and increase revenue. The shift eliminates manufacturing and distribution expenses, reduces revenue sharing with retailers, and boosts platform fees from third-party game sales on the PlayStation Store. Despite the criticism, experts suggest that the economic benefits of digital sales far outweigh the impact of cancelled subscriptions.

Industry analysts anticipate that Sony may address the backlash in some way but are skeptical about a complete reversal of the decision. The company's focus on improving profit margins through digital sales aligns with long-term economic strategies for platform sustainability.
