Sony has confirmed that it will no longer support physical discs for PlayStation games starting in January 2028.
Sony has announced that it will cease the production of physical discs for PlayStation games, both first- and third-party titles, beginning in January 2028. This decision comes as a response to the significant decline in physical software sales within the gaming industry. The shift towards digital game purchases has been steadily increasing, with Sony revealing that about 80% of full-game sales for PlayStation are now digital, a substantial increase from less than 10% at the launch of the PS4.
Other major publishers like Capcom and Electronic Arts are also experiencing a surge in digital game sales, with Capcom reporting that 93% of its game sales are now digital. Similarly, Nintendo saw a 25% year-over-year increase in digital game sales, accounting for over half of its total software sales for the fiscal year. Sony's decision to discontinue physical discs for PlayStation games is seen as a significant moment for the industry, with analysts suggesting that it could pave the way for a PS6 launch in 2028.
This move by Sony is aimed at cutting costs, eliminating the resale market, and driving all revenue through the PlayStation Store. While physical software sales are not obsolete, the trend towards digital distribution is undeniable, prompting Sony to align more closely with consumer preferences for accessing and playing games.
