Paramount Skydance's acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery faces a setback as a judge orders a temporary halt due to concerns raised by a coalition of 12 state attorneys, led by California Attorney General Rob Bonta. The pause, initially set for two weeks, could be extended to 28 days, delaying the expected deal closure on July 22. The judge's decision follows arguments that the merger may breach antitrust laws, potentially leading to increased film and TV prices.
The ruling allows Paramount and Warner Bros. to continue operating independently while awaiting further court proceedings. Despite Paramount Skydance's insistence that the antitrust laws are being misapplied, the coalition views the court order as a significant initial victory. If the acquisition proceeds, Paramount Skydance stands to gain ownership of Warner Bros. Games, including valuable gaming IPs like Hogwarts Legacy and Mortal Kombat. This move would also see the establishment of Paramount Games Studio, which is already working on projects such as a Star Trek horror game, Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra, and Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game.
