John Buckley, the communications lead for Palworld developer Pocketpair, expressed his thoughts on the use of AI in gaming, stating that gamers do not want it.
According to Buckley, Pocketpair is not interested in utilizing AI technologies for game development, as he believes gamers are not in favor of it. He also mentioned that while some companies use AI to save time, he questions the necessity of replacing in-house artists with AI systems. Buckley expressed concern over a possible future where games are labeled as '100% human made' to indicate the absence of AI tools in development.
Meanwhile, Tim Sweeney of Epic Games criticized Steam's AI disclosure section, arguing that most games incorporate AI in some form. Recent headlines were made when it was revealed that games like Crazy Taxi: World Tour and Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis used AI during development. Despite a vocal minority expressing concerns about generative AI in games, a growing number of consumers are now hesitant to purchase games that utilize this technology.
A study from GDC earlier this year indicated that over 50% of developers view generative AI as a threat to the video game industry, marking a significant increase from the previous year. Only a small percentage of respondents believed that generative AI had a positive impact on game development.
