Bloomberg reports that Obsidian has decided to scrap plans for Avowed 2 and other undisclosed projects in order to concentrate on a new Fallout game, which will be led by Josh Sawyer. Sawyer, known for his work on Fallout: New Vegas, was previously involved in developing an RPG with similarities to the Fallout series. Bethesda, the long-time steward of the Fallout franchise, will collaborate with Obsidian on this new project.
Although a small team will persist in working on Avowed 2 with the intention of potentially resurrecting the project in the future, a significant portion of Obsidian's workforce has been laid off as part of Xbox's recent restructuring efforts. This restructuring has also seen Microsoft part ways with several first-party studios, including Undead Labs.
Fans are likely thrilled by the news of a new Fallout game from Obsidian, especially considering the enduring popularity of Fallout: New Vegas. With no mainline, single-player Fallout title released in over ten years since Fallout 4 in 2015, and Fallout 76 being an MMO-style entry, the anticipation for a new installment is palpable. The ongoing success of the live-action Fallout TV series on Prime Video further underscores the demand for a new single-player Fallout experience, especially as Bethesda focuses on The Elder Scrolls 6, delaying any potential new Fallout game from their end for almost a decade.
