Nintendo's High Security for Tears of the Kingdom Announcement

Nintendo's The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom sequel announcement during E3 2019 surprised even many Nintendo employees due to the project's high level of secrecy.

Nintendo managed to keep the existence of Tears of the Kingdom under wraps to the extent that most employees only learned about it when it was teased during the E3 2019 Nintendo Direct livestream. Former Nintendo of America marketing and PR leads Kit Ellis and Krysta Yang revealed that the project had a higher level of security compared to other Nintendo endeavors they were involved in. Ellis, the director of social media marketing at the time, mentioned that he had to work on the sequel in secret, without the knowledge of his social team.

After the official teaser's successful reveal, Tears of the Kingdom eventually launched on Switch consoles, receiving widespread acclaim for its enhancements to Breath of the Wild's gameplay systems. The game, along with its predecessor, was updated for the Switch 2 upon its release. The Legend of Zelda franchise has maintained a strong presence on Nintendo platforms, with recent titles like Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment and the upcoming The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake.
