Nintendo is reportedly exploring the launch of an upgraded Switch 2 model with a 1080p OLED screen supplied by Samsung. The plans, although under discussion, are uncertain due to the higher manufacturing costs associated with OLED screens compared to LCD. These increased costs would need to be passed on to consumers, in addition to the rising prices of semiconductors and other electronic components.
If Nintendo proceeds with the Switch 2 OLED plans, development could commence late this year, with mass production targeted for late 2027 or 2028. This timeline would align the launch with the original Switch's release about three to four years after the Switch 2 debut. While fans anticipated an OLED standard for Switch 2, Nintendo reverted to LCD to manage costs. Despite the success of Switch Lite, there is no news on a Switch 2 Lite variant.
Nintendo has started updating the base Switch 2 design for Europe, introducing new versions with user-replaceable batteries to comply with EU regulations. The company will discontinue the sale of the aging Switch 1 in mid-February next year. Although reports suggest a screen improvement to address ghosting problems, Nintendo has not confirmed any details officially. Consumers in the U.S., Canada, and Europe have until September 1 to purchase a Switch 2 before the $50 price increase takes effect.
