Next-Gen Xbox Reportedly Without Disc Drive, Disc-To-Digital Feature

Following Sony's announcement about PlayStation discs in 2028 and speculation on the PS6, reports suggest Microsoft's next-gen Xbox, Project Helix, will also lack a disc drive.

According to Windows Central's Jez Corden, Project Helix will not include a disc drive, aligning with the industry trend towards digital sales. Microsoft is reportedly considering a disc-to-digital feature for transitioning physical games to digital copies. This feature, currently in testing, will allow conversion of Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S discs to digital versions, excluding Xbox 360 and original Xbox discs.

The Verge reported that Microsoft is still undecided on including a disc drive in Project Helix. The disc-to-digital feature would require a Microsoft account on an Xbox console, granting digital entitlements tied to specific discs. While not all existing discs will be supported, those included in the program will retain functionality as discs even after digitization.

Microsoft has been exploring disc-less console options for years, with the Xbox Series S already being digital-only. The shift towards digital sales over physical copies is evident across the industry, with companies like EA, Capcom, and Nintendo also noting increased digital game sales. Sony's decision to end disc support was driven by the rise in digital purchases, a trend likely mirrored by Xbox users.

Details on Project Helix are scarce, but Microsoft's commitment to its development remains strong, aiming to deliver cutting-edge rendering and simulation capabilities. Despite challenges related to component and memory pricing, Microsoft is dedicated to bringing Project Helix to the market.
