Director Matt Shakman is collaborating with writer Josh Friedman on a new Planet of the Apes film, separate from the previous installment, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. The last film in the series, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, released in May 2024 to critical acclaim and commercial success. Plans for a sequel were in progress, aiming for a 2027 release, but the recent developments suggest a change in direction.
Wes Ball, the director of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, has shifted focus to directing The Legend of Zelda film for Sony, potentially influencing the future of the Apes franchise.
