New details about Whore of the Orient, the canceled spiritual successor to LA Noire, have been revealed by a former writer on the project.
A former writer on LA Noire, Daniel McMahon, shared insights on Whore of the Orient, the game in development as a follow-up to LA Noire. The project, led by ex-Team Bondi staff at Kennedy Miller-Mitchell, was set in 1930s Shanghai and aimed for a denser experience than its predecessor, focusing on intricate details over vast scale.
Unlike LA Noire's post-crime solving approach, Whore of the Orient intended to have players prevent crimes before they occurred, adopting a proactive crime-fighting role. Unique challenges included language barriers for the British detective protagonist, with plans for a progressive language system and an evolved conversation mechanic.
The game's interrogation system was to offer players diverse approaches, allowing for roleplaying and varied outcomes based on choices. Combat was set to feature dynamic hand-to-hand mechanics inspired by Batman: Arkham series, alongside gunplay. Despite its promising features, funding and publisher issues led to the cancellation of Whore of the Orient at an early stage of development.
