Netflix has unveiled FIFA World Cup: Launch Edition, a soccer/football game set to release on June 11. The game offers a 'streamlined' experience where players use their phones as controllers, swiping to pass and shoot. It includes all 48 teams, 16 real-life stadiums, and 1,248 players from the World Cup. Updates will be daily, reflecting real-world events, with no microtransactions. Netflix plans a promotional ad for all members, and the game will also receive updates for the Women's World Cup in 2027. A limited test version is out in Brazil today, with a full release coinciding with the start of the World Cup.
Previously, EA Sports had capitalized on the World Cup with special game versions and events. However, following a split with FIFA, the latest EA Sports FC 26 game no longer features the FIFA license. Netflix's gaming offerings, including titles like Red Dead Redemption and Farming Simulator 2023, demonstrate the company's commitment to the gaming sector despite initial challenges. The streaming giant views gaming as a significant growth opportunity for the future.
