Microsoft Mulls Xbox Spin-Off, Accelerates Elder Scrolls and Fallout

Microsoft is exploring options for the future of the Xbox brand, including spinning it off into a separate company or operating as a 'wholly owned subsidiary.' The company is also planning to invest more in franchises like Halo, The Elder Scrolls, and Fallout to expedite development.

Microsoft is reportedly considering spinning off the Xbox brand into a separate company or running it as a 'wholly owned subsidiary' rather than a division within Microsoft. This move would potentially free Xbox from the high-profit-margin expectations of Microsoft, but it would also mean losing access to the vast resources of the larger company. The Information's report suggests that Microsoft aims to increase investment in key Xbox franchises such as Halo, The Elder Scrolls, and Fallout to accelerate their development.

The report comes after Xbox faced challenges, including a significant loss of subscribers to its Game Pass service following a price increase. However, a subsequent price cut and the removal of new Call of Duty titles from the library have helped improve the service. Microsoft's plans to boost investment in franchises like The Elder Scrolls and Fallout could indicate a push for more frequent releases. While The Elder Scrolls VI and Fallout 5 were announced years ago with minimal updates since, the upcoming Halo: Campaign Evolved is set to launch next month on PlayStation 5 alongside Xbox and PC. Despite this, Microsoft may focus more on console exclusives going forward, potentially scrapping plans for a PS5 version of Gears of War: E-Day.
