Microsoft Game Pass Strategy Falls Short of Subscriber Targets

Xbox CEO Asha Sharma has admitted Game Pass has failed to grow as Microsoft had expected, with reports indicating it is tens of millions of subscribers short of previous targets.

Xbox CEO Asha Sharma acknowledged that Game Pass did not reach the projected 77 million subscribers, currently standing at around 30 million. Microsoft's gaming strategy, which included Game Pass, has not yielded the anticipated results, leading to significant job cuts at Xbox. The company is also parting ways with several studios in an effort to realign its gaming division.

Despite heavy investments in content acquisition, such as the $69 billion spent on Activision Blizzard, Game Pass failed to attract the expected number of subscribers. The recent price hike and the removal of Call of Duty as a day one title further impacted subscriber numbers. Microsoft faces the challenge of reviving Game Pass's growth amidst declining figures and industry-wide hardware shortages.

With key studios leaving Microsoft's ownership and the uncertainty of future titles joining Game Pass, the service's future remains uncertain. Microsoft must strategize on how to leverage its current offerings to drive Game Pass growth and potentially reconsider its approach to exclusive title launches.
