Microsoft has initiated a significant restructuring, cutting 1,600 jobs immediately and planning to cut another 1,600 over the next year. The company stated that the restructuring does not involve the cancellation of any first-party games that have already been announced. In a blog post on Xbox Wire on July 6, Microsoft mentioned the sale of studios like Ninja Theory and Undead Labs, while the fate of others such as Arkane Studios remains uncertain.
While projects like Clockwork Revolution, Gears of War: E-Day, Senua, and State of Decay 3 are confirmed to be still in development, the future of games from Ninja Theory and Undead Labs after being sold remains unknown. Microsoft's decision not to cancel any projects now does not guarantee their safety under new ownership. The company has recently withdrawn from funding several projects, raising concerns about the fate of games like Arkane Studios' Marvel's Blade. Despite the uncertainty, the French studio is undergoing consultations as per labor laws to explore strategic options.
Although the layoffs affect around 3,200 employees at Xbox, representing about 20% of the workforce, the first-party Xbox games that have been publicly announced are currently unaffected.
