Micron CEO Sanjay Mehrotra expects the ongoing RAM shortage to persist through 2027 due to high demand and supply constraints.
Micron, a major memory manufacturer, anticipates the RAM scarcity continuing until 2027. In the Q3 2026 earnings report, CEO Sanjay Mehrotra highlighted the relentless demand in the semiconductor industry. Mehrotra mentioned that the tight conditions will extend beyond 2027, driven by AI-related demand and supply limitations.
The semiconductor industry has witnessed a surge in prices over recent years, mainly fueled by the need for chips in AI data centers. Micron's strategic shift away from the consumer market towards data center operations has also impacted hardware prices, including components for gaming systems like RAM sticks and consoles such as PS5 and Xbox Series X.
Despite the hope for gradual supply improvements in 2028, Mehrotra expressed uncertainty about when memory supply will catch up with the rising demand. This projection implies that elevated hardware prices are here to stay, affecting future console launches like PlayStation 6 and Xbox Project Helix.
